Drafters prepare detailed drawings based on rough sketch specifications and calculations made by scientists, engineers, architects, and designers. Various occupations drafting graduates are qualified to seek are detailer, machine drafter, designer, architectural drafter, structural drafter, survey technician and drafter, electrical drafter, engineering drawing checker, drafting department supervisor, and CAD drafter, operator, or technician.
The Drafting & Design Technology (DDT) program at Bevill State can be completed in just two years. Persons interested in becoming drafters should possess good skills in the application of basic math, including basic arithmetic, basic algebra, and geometry. Good writing and oral communication skills, along with the ability to follow instructions and sketches, are also important.
According to labor statistics, the number of drafting positions is expected to grow in coming years and opportunities will be very good for those with the necessary skills. The placement rate of graduates of the Bevill State Drafting and Design Technology program has exceeded 85% in recent years, with many students obtaining employment prior to graduation.
With quality educational training and experience, former students of the Drafting & Design Technology program at Bevill State make between $25,000 and $40,000 per year. Depending on the location of employment, graduates generally start at $11-$14 per hour and with a few years of experience can earn up to $35 per hour.
