Two months after announcing that the College would reinstate athletics, Bevill State Community College is now searching for coaches to lead the Basketball and Softball Programs. The two positions were recently posted to the College’s website. Joey May, former Baseball Coach and current Math Instructor at Bevill State, will resume duties as the head Baseball Coach for the College.
May coached the Bevill State baseball team on the Fayette Campus from 2000 until 2011 when all athletic programs were closed. During his time as coach, May posted appearances in two NJCAA World Series, one in 2001 and another in 2003. His team finished fifth in the nation in 2001 and third in 2003. The team was also Region XXII and State Champions for those years. May was named Coach of the Year by several organizations for those years as well.
“I am obviously very excited about the return of baseball and the athletic programs. I believe this is a bold decision that reflects the new leadership in place at our institution, and it is not just the reinstatement of our baseball program that I am excited about; it is the college wide approach to reenergizing our institution to propel it into the future. Our administration is making decisions that are in the best interest of our students and communities, which in turn is in the best interest for Bevill State. It is certainly an exciting time to be a part of Bevill State,” said May.
May will be joined by two new coaches at the College. Both the Basketball and Softball coaches will be part-time positions.
According to the job announcement posted on the College’s website, candidates for the coaching position should possess a Bachelor’s Degree with at least two years of coaching experience in an educational setting. Head-coaching experience is preferred. Once selected, the coaches will “conduct his or her athletic program in accordance with policies and procedures of the Alabama Junior and Community College Conference, the National Junior College Athletic Association, and the College. The coach is responsible for assuring that his or her program is a positive reflection on the players, the College, and the community.”
The College announced in May that athletics would be returning after a five-year absence. Bevill State plans to return men’s baseball to the Fayette Campus, men’s basketball to the Jasper Campus and women’s softball to the Sumiton Campus. Play in each sport is expected to begin in Fall 2017.
“From the moment we announced that Athletics would be returning to Bevill State, we have had many questions about when we would be hiring for the programs. With Coach May already in place, and the search for our other coaches underway, I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead for the College and especially for our students. I look forward to many winning seasons,” said Dr. Larry Ferguson, president of Bevill State.
The new coaches will be busy when they begin their duties. The job announcement lists many duties required for the position. Some of these duties include requisitioning, purchasing, inventorying, and maintaining equipment and supplies; preparing an appropriate schedule of games or matches according to conference policies; recommending scholarship awards for appropriate student athletes and student; assisting in maintenance of the athletic facilities of the College; and recruiting qualified student athletes that will represent the College in a positive and competitive manner.
Recruiting is already on the mind of Coach May as he explained that in college athletics, recruiting is the backbone of a program. “I want to identify and recruit talented young men with high character who want the opportunity compete in a highly competitive league. Most importantly, I am concerned about player development. I look forward to being a significant part of the personal and professional growth of my student athletes. I can’t wait to get started!”
